Bribery vs. Reinforcement

Some parents argue that using reinforcement to get their child to comply is bribery. The truth is reinforcement and bribery are two different concepts.

What is the main difference?

Timing!

Reinforcement:

If you show your child a prize and tell him if you complete your chores you can have this prize or earn a check on your chart, It is considered reinforcement.

Bribery:

If you negotiate after the fact and only offer a reward once your child refuses to comply then it is considered bribery. The child can learn to refuse to comply unless he is offered something.
